Do you remember my Black History Month Drawing challenge where I created illustrations featuring a little girl rocking different Black Hairstyles? Well, guess what? It is now a coloring book!

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of Black people across the diaspora. As an Afropean living in the US, this month has special meaning for me. I am reminded of how far we have come and how much further we still have to go.

This year, I am taking part in the celebration by launching a coloring book for all children about Black hairstyles. This book will help young people learn about and appreciate their own unique looks as well as those of their peers from different backgrounds. It will also provide them with a fun way to explore their creativity and express themselves through art.

By celebrating Black History Month and creating this coloring book, I hope to inspire young minds to take pride in their identity and be proud of who they are.

From Black History Month Challenge to Coloring Book Project

In February 2022 I challenged myself by participating in visual artist Vashti Harrison Instagram #28DaysOfBlackHair Challenge. At first of course, I was highly motivated but as the weeks went by, days got busy, and things became harder for me – Nonetheless, I am very proud to say that I was able to create more than half of the illustrations You can check out the process in this blog post.

A few weeks ago, while clearing some space off my computer, and going over some files, I revisited the illustrations and thought it would be a great idea to make these illustrations as a coloring book for children. There is never enough material representing children of color and I truly wanted to contribute to it.

The Process of Creating the Coloring Book

All the illustrations were in color so I had to recolor the artwork in illustrator. I also had to adjust some of the illustrations and rearrange the styles. Overall, it took me a couple of days to remove the colors.

After all the drawings were ready, I had to create the coloring book cover, as well as the inside layout from scratch using Adobe Illustrator. The result: a Coloring Book of Black Hairstyles featuring 16 Illustrations for Children! Take a look at some of the covers and some of the illustrations
